Autism Spectrum: Strengths, Supports, & Next Steps

Autism is not a deficit. It is a different way of perceiving, processing, and responding to the world. At SHIELD Psychiatry, we build on strengths while supporting communication, sensory regulation, flexibility, self-advocacy, and independence. We partner with families, schools, and care teams to help each young person thrive.

Who We Support

  • Youth experiencing sensory sensitivities, transitions, meltdowns, shutdowns, or rigid routines
  • Students seeking IEP or 504 advocacy, social-communication supports, or executive-function help
  • Young adults preparing for college, work, daily living, and self-advocacy
  • Families seeking collaborative, neurodivergent-affirming care without shame, blame, or alarm

  • Step 1: Collaborative history, strengths inventory, and goal setting with the family
  • Step 2: Functional behavior mapping, sensory profile review, and an initial support plan within the first 1–2 visits

  • Step 4: Ongoing progress tracking, independence building, and transition planning

We work alongside speech, OT, ABA, pediatric, and therapy teams when helpful, so care feels coordinated and practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is your care neurodivergent-affirming? Yes. We do not aim to “fix” identity. We focus on reducing distress, increasing access, and supporting strengths, functioning, and self-understanding.
  • Do you provide documentation? Yes. We provide clinical letters and supporting documentation for IEPs, 504 plans, and accommodations when appropriate.
  • Do you use medication? Medication is considered only when clearly indicated, usually for co-occurring concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, irritability, or sleep difficulties.
